Richard Jay Selma ( born Richard Jay Selma , November 4, 1943 - August 29, 2001) is a professional American baseball player , a pitcher . Served in MLB for ten years from 1965 to 1974.

Biography

At the student level, he played for the Fresno College team [1] . On March 28, 1963, he signed a contract with the New York Mets , for which he debuted two years later [2] .

In the second game, MLB made a shot in a 10- inning game against Milwaukee Brewers , scoring 13 strikeouts [3] and setting the club record at that time [4] . In total, he played four games in the 1965 season, having won two victories with one defeat. Over the next two seasons he performed in the role of Relief Pitcher . In 1968 he became the starting pitcher for the team, having played 23 games (9 wins - 10 losses, ERA 2.76) [2] . On October 14, 1968, the San Diego Padres was selected for the expansion draft.

On April 8, 1969, he made his debut for the Padres in the starting game of the season, playing a full game against the Houston Astros , making 12 strikeouts and winning, which became the first franchise in history [5] . Having played for the “Padres” just four games, April 25, 1969 was exchanged in the “ Chicago Cubs ” for Joe Nikro, Gary Ross and Frankie Libran. The results of the season in the Cubs: 10 wins, 8 losses, ERA 3.63 [2] . November 17, 1969 traded in "Philadelphia" .

In 1970, he played for the Phillies in the role of a cooler, making 22 saves in 73 games [2] . In 1972, he spent ten games as a starting pitcher, but most of his career at Philadelphia played as a reliver. May 8, 1973 left the Phillies after the completion of the contract.

On May 21, 1973, he signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals , but did not play a single match for them. At the end of the 1973 season, he moved to California Engels [2] .

In 1974, he played 18 games for the Angels, and then moved to Milwaukee Brewers . He played for Brewers in two games, after which he returned to Angels. He played for Californians two more matches, which became the last in his career [2] .

After completing a career he returned to Fresno . He then worked as a pitching coach for the high school team in Clovis .

He died on August 29, 2001 from liver cancer [1] .
