Biography
In 1787 , on the instructions of King Charles III , he studied in England, France, Prussia, Austria and Russia the organization of military forces of these powers, the following year took part in the Turkish war, and in 1791 published a description of this war and memories of his journey.
When the war between Spain and France broke out in 1807 , Contreras organized a people's militia, rejected the French General Junot, and under Montrion, with an 11,000th detachment, kept the French from further offensive. In the battle of Talavera (1809), Contreras commanded a Spanish detachment located on the left flank of the English army; later he was a corps commander with whom he defended the country between Tahoe and the Guadiana and saved Badajoz .
After the courageous protection of Tarragona was captured by the French.
In 1812 he managed to escape to London , where he published a description of Tarragona’s defense, reprinted in Paris in 1825: “Mémoires relatifs aux révolutions de France et d'Espagne” (vol. 3). In 1814 he returned to Madrid, but kept away from political life.
He died in 1826, in Madrid .
