Geography
Geographical position
The Berane community is located in the east of Montenegro, between the peaks of Belasitsa in the north, Tsmilevitsa in the east, Tivran gorge in the north, Sutesk and Previja in the south. It covers an area of ββ544 kmΒ².
Relief and geological structure
Physically and geographically, the Berane community is very diverse. The relief is heterogeneous, with formations indicating complex geological processes in the past. Terrain elements formed in different geological eras. Also, many rivers and streams run through the community, the largest of them is Lim.
Climate
The climate is temperate continental with little Mediterranean exposure in the valleys. The hottest months are July and August. The coldest are January and December. The average annual temperature is 8.5 Β° C.
The rainiest months are November and January, the driest months are March and July. There is little rainfall in the community. This mode of precipitation is not sufficient for agriculture, therefore, where possible irrigation is used.
Snow falls mainly from December to March. On the hills of Mokra, Smilevitsa, Turyak and Belasitsa, the ski season lasts from 80 to 120 days.
History
Until 2013, the community occupied an area of ββ717 square kilometers, while the community of Petnitsa was not allocated from its composition.
Economics
The municipality of Berane is one of the poorest municipalities in the Republic of Montenegro. Industrial production is very weak, as many companies have closed in the last 10 years. Due to industrialization, many residents moved to large cities, which is why agriculture is also in decline. Recently, however, new private companies in the retail and catering sectors have begun to appear.
The Berane community has one kindergarten, 13 primary schools and 4 secondary schools. There is a hospital in Berane with 61 doctors, 20 dentists and 350 auxiliary medical staff.
