Professional career
He made his debut in the professional ring on August 17, 2013, having won by knockout in the 1st round [1] .
In October 2015, he signed a contract with promoter Sampson Levkovits [2] .
On May 20, 2017, he knocked out in the 8th round of the former contender for the world title in the 2nd middleweight of Mexican Rogelio Medin . The fight wore the status of qualifying for the world title in the 2nd medium weight according to the WBC version [3] [4] [5] [6] .
Ronald Gavril Champion Rule
In July 2017, it was announced that a fight between David Benavides and former world middleweight champion American Anthony Dirrell will take place on September 9. At stake will be a vacant world title in the 2nd Middleweight according to the WBC [7] . In August, it became known that Dirrell was injured and will not be able to enter the ring. Benavides became the new rival Romanian Ronald Gavril . The fight was scheduled for September 8 [8] [9] . The fight, as a result, took place in Las Vegas and lasted all 12 rounds. Benavides won by split decision. The American became the youngest world champion in the history of the 2nd medium weight [10] [11] .
On February 17, 2018, a rematch with Ronald Gavril took place. Benavides won a landslide victory on points [12] [13] .
On September 18, 2018, it became known that one of the benavides doping tests gave a positive result - traces of benzoylekgonin, the main metabolite of cocaine, were found in it. The sample was taken on August 27 in the framework of the joint program of the WBC and VADA "Clean Box" [14] [15] . David apologized to the WBC and his fans, saying that he made a mistake [16] [17] . On October 3, Benavides was deprived of the champion title and declared the “champion on vacation” [18] [19] [20] .
