History

Prince Su-hong's aria from the operetta Land of Smiles was written by Franz Lehar in 1929 for the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber , with whom the composer was associated with creative collaboration and friendship. Especially for the singer, Lehar wrote musical numbers called “Tauberian songs” or “Tauberlides” ( German: Tauberlied ) [2] [3] .

The “ Land of Smiles ” has become the author’s revision of the operetta “Yellow Jacket” ( Victor Leon’s libretto), staged in 1923 at the An der Wien Theater in Vienna and not having widespread success. One of the reasons Legar returned to his early work on a plot from Chinese life was the singer’s illness - in early 1929, Tauber fell ill with rheumatism and was thinking about ending his stage career. The costume of the Chinese prince Su-Hong - a wide kimono with long sleeves - made it possible to hide the lameness and difficulty of the artist's movements [3] .

The new operetta text was written by the librettists Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Löner-Beda . The crown "Tauberian song" appeared with the participation of the singer himself - after reviewing the notes, Tauber chose a theme that was casually held in the "Yellow Jacket", which was developed by Lehar and became the melody of the hero’s aria. The composer wrote on a sheet of music: “Dear Richard! Here is your “tauberlid” !! The dedicatory inscription is dated August 17, 1929 [3] [4] [5] .

Su-Hong’s aria was first performed by Tauber at the premiere of the play at the Berlin Metropolitan Theater October 10, 1929, and according to criticism, it largely determined the success of the operetta [3] .

A melody of rare beauty and trembling tenderness, ending with an ecstatically high note, is the pearl of the work of the late Lehar. The tones of the melody are unexpected and so sweet that, if performed well, they can erase tears. The voice and manner of Tauber were presented here in the most favorable light [3] .

Subsequently, the aria became the "crown number" of the artist, Tauber performed it in different European languages, recorded on records [3] [4] .

Aria of Su-Hong entered the repertoire of the largest tenors in the world, including Nikolai Gedda , Fritz Wunderlich , Placido Domingo and others [3] .

The sounds of your speeches
Captivate stronger field colors.
The stars of your eyes
Burn stronger than lightning nights.
How many wonderful minutes
Full blisses await the chosen one!
The one who Marie loved you
A slave at your feet
He will die loving!

Good bye hours
Full of charm
Full of some strange mystery
And burning, and extraordinary,
Full of miracles!
You alone, unearthly beauty
Ready to sing about love
From dawn to dawn.
You for otherworldly dreams
Created, O Marie!

The sounds of your speeches
Captivate stronger field colors.
The stars of your eyes
Burn stronger than lightning nights.
How many wonderful minutes
Full blisses await the chosen one!
The one who Marie loved you
A slave at your feet
He will die loving!
