He studied at the Vienna Conservatory under Joseph Böhm and Georg Helmesberger . Since 1853 , he taught at the Vienna Teachers' Institute, since 1871 at the Vienna Conservatory. The most significant in the composer's legacy of Dont is pedagogical compositions: for example, Twenty-four Etudes and Capt's Donts “ Gradus ad Parnassum ” (Op. 35) still have not lost their significance. Among the students of Dont was, in particular, Leopold Auer .
In 1938 , a lane ( German: Dontgasse ) in Vienna was named after Don .
