He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Jaap Spaanderman as a pianist and with Bertus van Lier as a composer, then he improved as a pianist under the direction of Theo Brauns and Alfred Brendel . In 1970 , he received the first prize at the Gaudeamus competition for young performers.
Berman's pianistic specialization includes works by Bach , Haydn , Mozart and especially Schubert , as well as music by 20th-century composers, especially Dutch and Israeli (Berman’s discography includes, for example, the CD “Composers from Kibbutz,” 1985 ). Throughout his career, Berman has shown particular interest in piano duets and piano pieces for four hands.
Berman's composer's work is to a large extent a direct continuation of the performing. Berman owns the original cadenza for all the piano concerts of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven . In addition, he wrote the endings to the remaining unfinished works of composers of the past: “The Art of the Fugue” by Bach , Mozart’s four-piano sonata (K357), Schubert’s unfinished piano sonatas, Glinka’s viola sonata and others.
Berman taught piano at various schools in the Netherlands and Israel. Among his students, in particular, Margrit Helen and Dror Elimelech .
