Division Combat Path
Operation Barbarossa
On June 23, 1941, the 161st Infantry Division crossed the USSR border. [4] .
On July 17, 1941, during the seizure of the city of Lida , I witnessed the following incident: the commander of a cavalry platoon of the 336th infantry regiment of the 161st infantry division drove 20 Jewish citizens to be convoyed. This group of citizens consisted of people aged 16 to 60 years. When leaving the city they were treated very harshly. People were beaten with rifle butts to many in the blood of smashing faces. Then they had to dig a hole with continued torture. When the work was completed, people had to stand in a queue in front of the grave, after which, in turn, everyone was shot. There was no reason for such actions.

On July 30, 1941, the commander of the 1st battalion of the 364th Infantry Regiment of the 161st Infantry Division, Major von Klitzing, forced the captured Red Army soldiers, under the most powerful shelling, to deliver ammunition to the forward line. Seven Red Army men never returned.
