Biography
Ilya Smirnov began to engage in speed skating at the age of 12 [3] .
In 2016, Ilya Smirnov won two medals in the final of the Russian Cup in speed skating, which took place in Moscow . The athlete received a silver medal at a distance of 3000 meters, and at a distance of 1500 meters he was able to get a bronze medal [4] [5] .
At the beginning of playing sports, Ilya Smirnov did not have any specific goals for achieving high results and indicators, but over time, awareness of his abilities appeared. According to the athlete, this happened while watching the Olympics in Vancouver , in which Ivan Skobrev , another pupil of the coach Vitaly Vazhnin, participated. He realized that he could also achieve Olympic awards [2] .
He was the only representative from the city of Khabarovsk in Moscow , when about 70 athletes fought for the right to get tickets to the championship and the World Cup among juniors in the Krylatskoye sports complex in the framework of the Russian championship. The athlete was able to take 4th place. Competitions were held for 3 days, Ilya Smirnov competed in the all-around and competed in the 500, 1000, 1,500 and 5,000 meters. The decision about this choice of program was made by his coach Vitaliy Aleksandrovich Vazhnin. According to the trainer, the athlete would be ready to win in certain types of programs, but he could run distances with decent results [6] .
By order No. 78-ng dated June 8, 2015, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation Ilya Smirnov was awarded the sports title of Master of Sports of Russia [1] .
Athlete's coach Vitaly Vazhnin said that he was not immediately sure of achieving a good result, and he had to work hard, including with the athleteβs psychology. Because he came to classes very small and emotional, and the trainer's task was to raise a fighter from him. To do this, I had to say many things in a tough form that provoked sports anger - that was how a special approach to the athlete would be found. In 2015, he won the first medal in his career in the championship of Russia. Ilya Smirnov and his trainer Vitaliy Vazhnin went on this for a long time. After this achievement, the athlete was included in the Russian national team and began to listen more to the coaching advice. The coach claims - the qualities of a professional athlete appeared in his pupil - he strives for high results and good earnings [2] .
As of April 1, 2016, Ilya Smirnov is a first-year student of the Far Eastern Federal University, which is studying at the Department of Management, Economics and Law [3] .
Ilya Smirnov is among the athletes who will take part in the 2018 and 2022 Olympics .
