Creativity

As a rule, Richard Long takes walks in secluded places, collects pebbles and twigs and builds compositions from them. Most often, circles or other simple geometric shapes, such as “Circle of Wands” ( 1973 ) or “Shale Circle” ( 1979 , Tate Gallery).

Sometimes an artist creates similar compositions in a natural environment and documents them using photographs, texts and maps.

The most laconic of his early works was not even picking up branches, but simply walking back and forth along the lawn until a path that could be photographed on the grass trampled. This 1967 work “Treadmill Line” approved Long in the tempting idea to abandon the traditional drawing on paper and begin to search for lines anywhere, even in the grass.

The artist is internationally recognized (in 1976, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale ), although critic Peter Fuller described his work as "simply laying out some collected stones."

Recognition and Rewards

In 1989, the artist was awarded the Turner Prize , in 2009 - the Imperial Prize (Japan).
