“Ancient Russia in the Middle Ages World” is a specialized encyclopedia in Russian devoted to the history and culture of Ancient Russia from its origin to the Mongol invasion in the 13th century . Scientists from the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences , edited by E. A. Melnikova and V. Ya. Petrukhin, took part in the creation of the encyclopedia. In addition to these authors, Belarusian, Ukrainian and other Russian scientists also worked on the encyclopedia.

Encyclopedic articles featured more than 2 thousand, which are listed in alphabetical order and contain information about the most significant events in the history and culture of Ancient Russia in the pre-Mongol period. Their writing took place over two decades by 171 authors, specialists in archeology, history, art history and philology [1] .
The encyclopedia presents all the monuments of ancient Russian literature of the pre-Mongol period, monumental construction, icon painting . And also the ancient Russian cities ( Izborsk , Beloozero , Novgorod and others), the centers of the Baltic ( Birka , Hedeby , Riga , Kolyvan ) and the Black Sea ( Korsun , Korchev ), Itil , Saksin , Tsargrad , Thessaloniki and other cities [2] .
On a linguistic topic, there are articles on Old Slavonic alphabet , Glagolitic , Cyrillic , “Tales of Russian Literature”, the activities of Cyril and Methodius , etc. There are also articles on ancient Russian chronicles , birch bark letters , on the codology of ancient Russian manuscript books, as well as the most famous manuscripts : Ostromir Gospel , Mstislav Gospel , Panteleimon Gospel , Reims Gospel , Sbornoslav Из Izbornik ’ , Kormchi book , etc.
There are detailed historical and archaeological information on the East Slavic, Baltic, Finno-Ugric and Turkic tribes that made up the population of Kievan Rus and the Russian principalities of the X-XIII centuries, or who had trade, military, diplomatic contacts with them. Articles are also presented on the relationship of Ancient Russia with Bulgaria , Poland , the Czech Republic , Prussia , Hungary , Scandinavia , and the Arab Caliphate [3] .
On the topic of economic history, articles have been written on crafts, trade, agriculture, animal husbandry, pottery, construction equipment, tribute, “the way from the Vikings to the Greeks,” the monetary system, money circulation, leather and fur money, tithing, hryvnia, etc. [ 4] .
A lot of articles are devoted to military campaigns, military organization, weapons and protective weapons of ancient Russian squads and military men.
Biographies of prominent figures of history, primarily Old Russian princes, as well as prominent writers and figures of the church: archbishops, bishops, abbots, are included.
The publication is colorfully illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps and tables [1] .
