Opening
Egyptologist Edward Ayrton , sponsored by American millionaire Theodore M. Davis, discovered the tomb on February 22, 1908. Before this, Ayrton found another tomb, about which he planned to provide a detailed report, but in the end he was never published and is lost today.
In 1912, Davis released a catalog of objects of the entire funeral complex. [one]
In 1923, Gary Burton released for the Metropolitan Museum a collection of photographs of the tomb, and in 1971, thanks to Eric Hornung, they came out in color. [2]
Nearby is the tomb KV58, whose belonging to any historical person has not been established. It is considered as a utility room for the tomb of Horemheb.
Description
The tomb, measuring 469.67 x 106.58 m 2 at a depth of 29.52 m, resembles a dog with four legs apart. The curved axis of the XVIII dynasty gradually changes to the straight line of the tombs of the XIX — XX dynasties.
The tomb is notable for not just painted walls, but colored bas-reliefs, first used in the royal tomb. Fragments of Amduat from the Book of the Gate are also presented here for the first time. [3]
Despite the long reign of Horemheb (according to Wolfgang Helk - 12 years and 3 months; according to Rolf Krauss - 27 years), the decorations in the tomb were not finished. This circumstance helps modern scientists to trace the technology and stages of drawing drawings on the walls of tombs.
A red quartzite sarcophagus was discovered with a broken lid. Inside were remains not belonging to Horemheb.
