Wass, Renee Antoine

Rene-Antoine Wass ( French René-Antoine Houasse ; 1645 , Paris - 1710 , Paris ) - French artist of the Rococo era. Representative of the French art school of the era of Louis XIV . Member of the French Royal Academy of Fine Arts (since 1673).

Biography

One of the most devoted students and staff of Charles Lebrun , under whose leadership he worked at the Tapestry Manufactory , from 1670 in the Tuileries and, especially, in Versailles , where he took part in the decoration of the Large Apartments - the Mars Salon and later, around 1680 - the Salon Venus.

Since 1688, he wrote for the Great Trianon a series of paintings on mythological subjects (The History of Minerva and others).

From 1699 to 1704 he was director of the French Academy in Rome .

Its neoclassical style is characterized by a subtle gray-blue color (Saint Stephen, 1675, Louvre , Paris).

The author of mythological and religious paintings depicting various myths with the participation of the Greco-Roman goddess Athena / Minerva .

Rene-Antoine Wass was married on February 5, 1673, to Marie Le Bleu, cousin of Charles Lebrun . They had two children:

  • Agnes-Suzanne Wass (1674-1719), September 18, 1690, married Nicola Couste (1658-1733).
  • Michel-Ange Wass (1680-1730), artist of genre scenes.

Renee Antoine Wasse died at the Gramont Hotel in Paris in 1710.
