Marquis Francois Barbe-Marbois ( fr. François Barbé-Marbois ; born in Metz 1745; d. 1837) - French politician, was exiled to Cayenne after the coup 18 of the fructidore (1797); under Napoleon I, the Minister of Finance did not last long; under Louis XVIII Minister of Justice [7] .

Biography
Thanks to the patronage of , whose teacher was Barbé-Marbois, he was appointed Consul General in the United States and then Quartermaster in San Domingo (1785). Returning to France at the beginning of the Revolution , in the fourth year of the republic, Barbe-Marbois was elected from the Moselle department to the Council of Elders . There he soon occupied a prominent position and was elected president in the fifth year , but the attacks on the Directory entailed his arrest and then exile to Guiana [8] .
After 2 years, he received freedom and in 1801 was appointed director of the state treasury. In the same year, Barbe-Marbois received the Order of the Legion of Honor and the Earl's title for successfully negotiating the cession of Louisiana to the United States. But a few years later, as a result of an erroneous financial transaction, he fell out of favor and was dismissed (Jan. 27, 1806). In 1808, however, Napoleon again called him up and made him the first president of the [8] .
In 1814, Barbe-Marbois was one of the four editors of the act of deposition of the emperor , was able to very soon win the favor of the new sovereign and was made peer of France . During the Hundred Days, Barbé-Marbois was to leave Paris and returned only after the second restoration (1815). The king offered him, despite his declining summers, the position of Minister of Justice [8] .
