Biography

Eric Larson was born on September 3, 1905 in Cleveland , Utah . When he was 10 years old his family moved to Salt Lake City . Eric was born into a Mormon family and followed his faith all his life.

Although Eric wasn’t serious about drawing until joining Walt Disney’s studio, he did drawings for his school yearbook when he was at Latter Day Saints University, and even was his art director in his final year. He soon entered the University of Utah, where he studied journalism and wrote articles for a university newspaper. In his free time, he was engaged in drawing illustrations for a humorous magazine. While studying at the university, there was an incident with Eric that he didn’t even tell his colleagues about, because of which Eric was forced to leave the university and then leave Salt Lake City forever.

Eric moves to Los Angeles , where he gets a job as a private artist. There he met his future wife - Gertrude Jannes - whom he married in 1933. After his marriage, he was thinking of making a career on the radio, for which he turned for advice to former radio journalist Richard Creedon. Creedon, in turn, advised Eric to try to get a job at Disney Studios, knowing that he draws well. Reluctantly, Eric Larson followed Creed's advice and was accepted into the studio as an intermediate artist.

Eric Larson animated characters in such cartoons as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Pinocchio , Fantasy , Bambi , Cinderella , Alice in Wonderland , Peter Pan , Lady and the Tramp , Sleeping Beauty , 101 Dalmatians , Sword in Stone , and The Jungle Book . In 1973, he began at the studio a program for transferring experience to young artists. Such famous animators as Brad Bird , Don Blut , John Lasseter , Chris Buck, Tim Burton , Glen Keane and many others passed through this program.

In 1975, Gertrude dies, which is why Eric has been depressed for a long time. In the 80s, his work at the studio was not so significant: he mainly consulted. In 1986, he leaves the studio due to disagreements with the new management.

Eric Larson died on October 25, 1988, at the age of 83. Prince Eric in the cartoon "The Little Mermaid " received a name in memory of Eric Larson.
