History

Yehud is mentioned in the Bible in the list of cities in this region (“Judea, Bnei Brak, and Gat Rimon” - Book of Joshua : 19, 45). The Aramaic word Yehud refers to the province of the Persian Empire , Yehuda Medinat, in the approximate location of the Kingdom of Judea , where a silver coin with the three-letter YHD inscription was minted. The actual size of Yehud since then remains the subject of discussion by scientists (for example, he occupied the entire territory of the previous kingdom, or was much smaller). There are also discussions on the population of Yehud (for example, it consisted only of those Jews who returned from Babylon , or the latter mixed with “people (already) in the land” - עם הארץ).

In the following centuries, Yehud became the Arab city of Al-Yehudiya [Yehudiya] (literally in Arabic : "the place of the Jews" ), also called Al-'Abbasiyya, but the Arab population completely abandoned it during the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 .

The city was inhabited in the beginning of the 1950s by lady-speaking Jews of Turkish origin, and then by Jews from Bialystok ( Poland ) and other parts of the diaspora . The city has expanded significantly in recent years, industrial and hi-tech industries have developed with companies such as IAI and Mercury Interactive, which has attracted thousands of scientists and specialists to new, highly investment areas of the city, such as Givat Avia, Kiryat ha Savyonim ", etc.

In June 2011, city officials announced that they were committed to launching a large-scale construction project to replicate the old town square of the Swiss city of Lugano in the center of Yehuda, to revitalize trade and tourism . The architectural replica will abound in neoclassical colonnades [1] .

Local government

The Yehud-Monosson Municipality was established in 2003 to provide municipal services in Yehud and the neighboring Neve Monosson settlement (2,600 inhabitants for 2003). According to the terms of the merger, Neve Monosson remains with a high degree of autonomy in the hands of the local administration. In 2005 , as part of the implementation of the merger plan, the Minister of the Interior granted the local administration of Neve Monosson the status of a municipality in the autonomous region. In practice, the Yehud-Monosson municipality functions as a municipality in the Yehud district of the city, while the provision of basic statutory municipal services in Neve Monosson is outsourced .
