The son of an adviser to the imperial court. He served as an official in a court of justice in Vienna.
Amateur singer. His mentor was singer Johann Michael Fogl .
He was a friend of the composer Franz Schubert and one of the best performers of his songs. His companion was another friend of the composer Johann Baptiste Jänger .
In 1823, Franz Schubert dedicated to Karl von Schönstein the cycle of songs “Die schöne Müllerin” - “The Beautiful Miller” or “Miller’s Love”, his first peak work. [2]
Contemporaries said that Karl von Schönstein “may have been Schubert’s best singer.”
