The seventh brother (and the eldest of them) - Gary - decided to continue his father's work and became a farmer . The brothers claimed that in children's hockey, Gary was among them much more talented and promising.
The brothers grew up on a Viking farm, Alberta , Canada. Since childhood, all brothers participated in the work on the farm. Their father considered hockey useful for character development. With the help of his sons, he was able to equip a hockey venue on his land where they played three for four, a team of three always played Gary, there were no goalkeepers, the goal was smaller (50 cm wide), a rule was established - closer than six meters Do not throw the gate. The game went on for four hours in a row. Dwayne subsequently recalled that all brothers ride easier than walk. In the summer they played in a barn, weighted with a tennis ball instead of the puck. In 1976, the NHL club St. Louis Blues invited to join Brian. At the family council, it was decided to try and, if Brian did not succeed in becoming a professional player, put an end to hockey with the whole family. Brian tried hard for himself and for the brothers, the financial aspect was not unimportant: the NHL player on average had an income twice as much as his father-farmer. The coaches were amazed at the physical endurance of the Sutter brothers - “they could play without changing at all”, and the charge for the fight - Brian “was ready to get the puck with his fists.”
On the recommendation of Brian, the Chicago Black Hawks club invited Darryl (1978). In the offseason, the brothers organized the Sutter Only team and met with various teams from across Canada. Gradually, the other four brothers also became NHL players: Brent and Dwayne at the New York Islanders , Richard and Ron at the Philadelphia Flyers .
