History

In the first editions of the Tour de France, riders competed in the race individually. Despite the fact that some of them sponsored by the same company they were not allowed to work together in a team. This was due to the fact that the organizer of the tour, Henri Degrange, wanted the Tour de France to show the individual strength of the participant. In those years, Cyclists also could perform on the Tour without sponsor support, receiving various names: [1]

  • 1909-1914: Isolés (Isolated)
  • 1919: Catégorie B (Category B)
  • 1920-1922: 2 e classe (2nd grade)
  • 1923-1936: Touristes-Routiers (Tourist Racer)
  • 1937: Individuel (Individually)

In 1930, Henri Degrange resigned himself to the idea that cyclists could work collectively and decided to acknowledge the presence of teams. However, remaining an adversary of sponsors, cyclists are grouped into teams based on the country they represent. This continues until 1961, inclusive. From 1962 to 1966, cyclists began to represent sponsorship teams. In 1967 and 1968, teams were again formed based on the country of the rider. And in 1969, there was a return to sponsorship teams.

The team event that appeared at the Tour de France in 1930 is called Challenge International and is calculated by adding the time of the three best riders [2] in the overall standings .

In 1961, the regulation changed to the spectacle format, which lasted only two Tours. According to him, the stage winner brought his team one point. The team that scored the most points in the race became the winner of the classification.

Since 1963, the regulation has again returned to the provisional format.

At the Tour de France 1973 in parallel to the main team classification in time, a spectacle is added, but in a slightly different version, which lasted until 1988 . After each stage, all riders receive points (the winner receives one point, the second two points, and so on), and they are added to the overall team. The team with the least points becomes the winner. As a distinctive element of the leader is a green helmet . [3]

Until 1990, the leading team wears a distinctive yellow helmet during the stages. Since 2006, the helmet has been replaced by a yellow number. [2] [4] Starting from 2012, in addition to the yellow number, the team gains the right to use the yellow helmet as well. [5] [6]

The record holders for victories among the national teams are Belgium and France. Among sponsorship teams, the French Mercier , and the German T-Mobile became the best three times in a row.

Rules

The place in the classification at the moment is calculated by summing the time of the three best racers of the team at each stage of the race without taking into account temporary bonuses and penalties. During a team race , the time of the fifth member of the team or the last if the team has less than five riders is taken into account. A team in which less than three riders are left is removed from the classification. At the end of the race, the team with the least amount of time is declared the winner of the classification.

Status

The team classification is considered less prestigious than the general one and it rarely happens that a team starts a Tour with the main goal of winning a team classification. If during the race the team is in a good position to win and the team standings, it can change its tactics for this. [2]

When Lance Armstrong lost hope of winning in 2010 , he instructed his teammates to keep tabs on their main rivals for team classification, and his team, Team RadioShack, won the team classification. [2]

A good result in team classification can help a team qualify for a wild card for the next Tour de France , and is also part of the UCI ProTeams definition system created in 2010. [2]
