Strongylognathus alpinus

Strongylognathus alpinus (lat.) - a species of ants-slave owners of the genus Strongylognathus from the subfamily Myrmicinae ( Formicidae ). Included in the IUCN International Red Book. Endemic to Europe: Italy [1] , France [1] and Switzerland [2] . It is found at altitudes from 1500 to 2000 m (in the Alps from 1700 to 2000 m). The body is brown. Occipital margin slightly concave. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: the petiolus and postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen). The petiol nodule is a little shiny; transverse grooves are developed on the postpetiol. The sting is developed, pupae are naked (without cocoon). Parasitizes on ants of the genus Tetramorium . In France and Switzerland, the species Tetramorium impurum is indicated as the host [1] . The species was first described in 1909 by the American worldmecologist William Wheeler in the status of a subspecies under the original name Strongylognathus huberi subsp. alpinus Wheeler, 1909 [2] [1] [3] . Raid behavior was recorded at night [4] . The species name is associated with the first location of the type series in the Swiss Alps [2] .
