Vera is a font family released with a liberal license. Developed by Jim Lyles of Bitstream Inc. , and is largely based on Bitstream Prima, also created by Liles. Bitsteam Vera is a TrueType type font with hinting instructions, which improves the font display on low-resolution devices, such as computer monitors. In addition, for LaTeX users , the font is available in Type 1 format under the name Bera [1] .

Vera includes serif , sans-serif, and monospaced fonts.
Although Vera itself contains a small set of characters, including common punctuation and the Latin alphabet with dialectic characters, its license allows someone to create derivative works and distribute them with some restrictions - one example is the DejaVu font family , which contains additional glyphs (including Cyrillic alphabet) and faces. Currently, the DejaVu font family is gaining the role of the main font family in GNU / Linux - it is installed on more than 80% of GNU / Linux computers. At the same time, the DejaVu family is practically unknown on Windows and Macintosh , while Bitstream Vera Sans is installed on 25% and 20% of such systems (79% on computers with Unix-like OSs). Bitstream Vera Sans Mono monospace font is often used because it can clearly distinguish between similar characters: 'l' (L in lower case) from '1' (number one) and 'I' (i in upper case), as well as' 0 '(zero) from the letter' O ', in contrast to the more common font Monotype Courier New [2] . Sans Mono's derivative, Menlo, is distributed by Apple as part of the Mac OS X 10.6 operating system.
