Biography
Henry Nunnen was born into the family of police officer Klaas Nannen and his wife Eliza, née Buitenduf. He studied at the bookseller, in 1934-1938 he studied art criticism at the University of Munich. He gained his first professional experience as a freelancer in the specialized newspaper Die Kunst , published by Hugo Brookman . Nannen's journalistic career began on Bavarian Radio . During the 1936 Olympics, Nunnen worked as an announcer at a stadium in Berlin. The voiceover in the two-part film Leni Riefenstahl , Olympia , also belongs to Henry Nunnen. For opposing the authorities, Nannen during this period received a ban on professional activities and was expelled from the university. Sanctions against Nannen were lifted only in 1937 thanks to the intercession of Hugo Brookman.
During World War II, Nunnen served in the Luftwaffe as a war correspondent for the Wehrmacht propaganda company , in the Southern Star division of the Kurt Eggers SS regiment. This unit conducted propaganda against the Western allies in Italy. The South Star patch is believed to have subsequently served as the prototype for the Stern magazine logo. In 1944, Henry Nunnen published his novel Störfeuer von MI71 in the series “ German Youth Military Library ” (issue 144). After the war, Nannen founded the daily newspaper Hannoversche Neueste Nachrichten in 1946 and worked on it until 1947. In 1947-1949, Nannen worked as the chief editor of Hannoversche Abendpost.
In 1948, Henry Nunnen transformed the Zick-zack youth magazine into the Stern magazine. In 1951, he sold his stake in the magazine to the owner of the printing house Richard Gruner and the weekly Die Zeit Gerd Bucerius . In 1949-1980, Nunnen worked as the editor-in-chief of Stern magazine, until 1983 he was also its publisher. Under Nannen, Stern turned from an illustrated publication into a full-fledged magazine with Europe’s largest print run. Stern reporting often sparked fierce debate in society. After the scandal involving Conrad Kuyau's “Hitler diaries” forged in 1983, Nunnen publicly admitted his responsibility for the lack of journalistic integrity.
On the occasion of his 70th birthday, passionate art collector Henry Nunnen and his wife Marta presented their artistic collection to their native Emden, which consisted mainly of paintings and sculptures by German expressionists. In 1986, specially built for the Kunsthalle collection opened. In 1989, Nunnen was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen Emden, where he returned in the 1980s. In 1990, Henry Nunnen entered into a third marriage with Eske Nannen, nee Nagel, who currently runs an art museum. Henry Nannen has a son, Christian (born 1946), the granddaughter of Henry Nannen, Stefania, works as a journalist in Hamburg.
