Biography and Activity

David Ginzburg was born in Warsaw to a Jewish family. Accepting baptism at the age of 15 (1846) and the name Christian David , Ginsburg served some time in the Liverpool branch of the London Missionary Society , but in 1863 he refused missionary activity and completely devoted himself to literature. [3]

After publishing his own translations of the Song of Songs (1857) and Ecclesiastes (1861), he wrote a number of essays on the Karaites (1862), the Essenes (1864), and gave in English a full account of the teachings of the Kabbalists (1865) [3] .

After this, Ginsburg devoted himself entirely to Masore ; in 1867, he published the text and translation of the work of Elia Levita "Massoret ha-Massoret", as well as "Introduction to the rabbinical Bible" by Jacob ben-Haim [3] .

In 1870, Mr .. Ginsburg was elected a member of the commission established to revise the biblical text, and engaged in the collection of all existing materials on Masor; in 1880-1886 they were released three volumes of these materials. Based on them, he published for the new text of the Bible , published in 1894 under the title “The massoretico-critical text of the Hebrew Bible”. He provided the edition with an introduction, which together with the photographs of the manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible formed a special volume (1897). The methods by which Ginsburg established the Masoretic text were subjected to critical analysis by . Ludwig Blau , “Jewish Quarterly Review”), the latter being a staunch opponent of Ginsburg. [3]

Ginsburg wrote a detailed study of the inscription of Mesha and in the process contributed to the exposure of Moses Schapira (1871). Ginsburg also published a translation of the New Testament into Hebrew (1885, 1886, and 1891). [3]
