History
Establishment of the province in the Third Reich
By the decree of the Fuhrer of July 1, 1944, the province of Hesse-Nassau was abolished. In accordance with the boundaries of the party Gau, two independent provinces were proclaimed in its territory: Kurgessen - in the territory of Kassel and Nassau - in the territory of Wiesbaden . The provisions of the decree came into force on July 1, 1944.
The decree also provided for the transfer of the Hanau, Gelnhausen and Schluchtern districts, as well as the non-district Hanau city from Kassel district to Wiesbaden district and, thus, to the province of Nassau. In addition, the exclave region of Schmalkalden belonging to the district of Kassel was transferred to the district of Erfurt , which, due to the simultaneous liquidation of the province of Saxony, passed into direct subordination to the Reichsthalter in Thuringia.
Thus, the territory of the new province of Kurgessen coincided with the territory of the homonymous Gau. And Gau Hessen-Nassau now covers the territory of the and the Prussian province of Nassau. Ober-President of the Province of Kourgessen was appointed Gauleiter Gow Kourgessen .
Province liquidation after the war
The province of Kurgessen did not last long. In September 1945, by decree of the Prussian provinces of Curgessen and Nassau (except for the western part of Montabaur found in the French occupation zone), as well as the provinces of and (Hessen The province of also ended up in the French zone) were merged into the new land of the , from which the present-day Hessen was formed .
