Evangelical harmony ( lat. Harmonia evangelica ) is one of the names of auxiliary theological science (harmonistics), which has as its goal the coordination of evangelical tales, or the reduction of narrations of the Evangelicals into one coherent, integral narrative. In the East, called the Gospel Symphony . [one]
The techniques used by Gospel harmony are different:
- one of the gospels is taken as a basis and its story is replenished with events and facts recorded from other evangelists;
- A general outline of the Gospel narration is drawn up independently and the facts communicated by the four Evangelists are already strung on it.
In this case, there is a need for a comparative assessment of the story of the Evangelists - and then the text becomes the first source of New Testament criticism. [one]

The earliest authors of the Gospel symphony are the authors of “Diatessarons” ( ancient Greek διὰ τεσσάρων , literally: “after four”), or “Harmony of the Gospels” [1] :
- Syrian Tatian (" Diatessaron "; the last third of the II century);
- Egyptian Ammonius of Alexandria (first half of the III century).
In the West, the first experiments of gospel harmony appear no earlier than the 6th century.
- Harmonia Evangeliga (1537) by Andreas Oziander ;
- Synopsis evangeliorum (Galle, 1774-1775) by Johann Griesbach .
With the further development of the symphony, it naturally passed on to the scientific corpus of gospel narratives, which is seen in the most important works with the task of presenting the whole life of Jesus Christ , for example [1] :
- The Life of Jesus Christ (1874) by Frederick Farrar ;
- “Jésus Christ” (1890) by Henri Dido et al.
Although, as before, the experiments of the symphony in its original form were encountered, the example in Russia is “The Gospel Story of God the Son” by Theophan the Recluse (Moscow, 1885) [1] .
