Biography

Alboyno was the second son of Alberto I della Scala and Verdi di Salizzo [2] [3] . At the end of September 1298, he married [4] daughter Matteo I Visconti . In 1304 , after the death of his brother, Bartolomeo became the ruler of Verona. For the first time in the history of Verona, Alboyno immediately received the title of national captain and paddesh [5] .

In his foreign policy, Alboyno traditionally for the Scaligers supported the Ghibelline party.

In March-April 1304, Alboyno was invited to mediate in resolving the conflict between Padua and Venice. However, he entered into negotiations with Padua Padua Botticelo Bonacolsi. As a result of their union, the Antivenitsa coalition was created. May 18, 1304 Verona entered the war. In spite of this, Padua was defeated after a few months and was forced to sign peace in Treviso [5] .

From 1305, a conflict began with representatives of the noble Guelph family Este [5] . In May 1305, in order to fight the Marquess of Ferrara, Azzo VIII, d'Este Alboino created a coalition with Bonacolsi, Bishop of Brescia and the cities of Mantua , Parma and Cremona . In November of the same year, Alboyno formed an alliance with Giberto da Correggio to expel Azzo VIII from Modena, Reggio and from Ferrara itself. To consolidate the union, Alboyno married the daughter of Giberto to . In the summer of 1306, after minor clashes, Albboyno launched an offensive in Ferrarese and soon, together with Botticelo Bonacolsi, captured Ficarolo . After that, they moved their troops north to the aid of Matteo Visconti. In October 1306 they managed to conquer Bergantino. The chronists of Este indicate that detachments from Brescia fought on the Alboyno side, which testifies to the relationship of the Scaligers with this city even before it entered into the possession of this family. In August 1307, hostilities resumed already in Cremona, the Allies captured captured Veronesi and Mantovani. However, further luck turned away from them and in the autumn of the same year Este attacked Ostilla. The death of Azzo VIII (January 31, 1308) led to a rapid cessation of hostilities. On March 3 and 15, 1308, peace was concluded at the Montegrotto talks between the warring parties. Along with Alboyno, his younger brother, Can Grande I, took part in these negotiations for the first time. From that moment on, the brothers together rule in Verona. Expanded its borders to the borders of Bergamo , joining Brescia to its possessions. The Albuno della Scala Board laid the foundation for the further rise of the Scaliger family [3] . He died on November 29, 1311.
