In 1054 , after the death of Yaroslav the Wise , the Novgorod prince Izyaslav became the grand prince of Kiev , and in Novgorod he left his son Mstislav the prince.

XI century

Prince of Polotsk Vseslav Brjachislavich , nicknamed Wizard, in 1065 made a raid on Pskov , who kept him under siege, but did not take it, and in 1067 on the bank of the Cherekhi river he defeated the army of Prince Mstislav Izyaslavich and occupied [2] Novgorod . Novgorod was half burned. Vseslav captured the captives and removed the bells from the Novgorod Sophia Cathedral , grabbing icons and utensils of the Novgorod churches to the principality [3] [4] . After that, Mstislav fled to Kiev to his father.

It is also known that his father Izyaslav, returning from Poland in 1069 , sent Mstislav in front of him to Kiev, where Mstislav perpetrated reprisals against the instigators of the uprising, and the perpetrators of the expulsion of his father Izyaslav Yaroslavich interrupted or blinded.

Marriage and Children

The name of his wife Mstislav unknown. He had at least one son:

  • Rostislav (died October 1, 1093), Prince of Brest

  2. ↑ 1 2 The attacks on Pskov and Novgorod were caused, as some researchers assume, by Vseslav’s desire to pay for the destruction of Polotsk in 980 .
  3. ↑ Later, in the same (1067) year, Vseslav was caught by Izyaslav , Svyatoslav and Vsevolod, and was put into prison with two sons in Kiev.
  4. There is an assumption that the loot (church utensils, icons and bells) was intended for the Polotsk Sofia Cathedral under construction at that time.
