The nature and scope of agricultural geography
The geography of agriculture is a branch of geography that studies the relationship between agriculture and the environment. In addition, it analyzes agriculture from a spatial point of view. Like other geographical sciences, it investigates the genesis and causes of phenomena in agriculture both on the territory of the whole Earth, as well as at the local level.
The geography of agriculture in connection with the specifics of agriculture explores mainly:
- geographical position
- terrain
- agroclimatic resources
- water conditions
- the soil
- environmental value in terms of agriculture
- land ownership features
- organizational and technical features (e.g. mechanization, collectivization)
- features of production (for example, growing agricultural crops)
The geography of agriculture did not study gathering and hunting, despite the presence of similar products in agricultural production. However, after expanding the definition of agriculture with the addition of forestry and fisheries, the geography of agriculture now also engages in these areas.
In addition, the subject of the study of geographers of agriculture is not the biological and chemical aspects of agriculture, such as the chemical composition of the soil and soil formation processes.
