Biography
Born in Verona in 1872. His parents were modest shopkeepers in the city center, not far from the New Bridge over the Adige River. Barbarani was sent to college to study, which he had to leave after his father died in 1887 to help his mother manage the shop. He soon continued his studies at the Faculty of Law at the University of Padova, but did not graduate. Barbarani published his first poems in a student newspaper in 1892. Subsequently, they entered his first poetic collection, The Rosary of the Heart (1895).
In the same 1895 he began working as a journalist, collaborating with the newspaper L'Adige, then with the newspaper Gazzettino. At this time, he met and made friends with the poets Alfredo Testoni from Bologna and Carlo Alberto Salasti, known under the pseudonym Trilussa, from Rome. Together with them, Barbarani participated in the Dante Alighieri charity poetic evening cycle at the Duse Theater in Bologna in 1901. A caricature of Augusto Mayani, nicknamed Nazik, on which Barbarani is depicted with a poetic lyre in his hands against the background of the Ancient Arena in Verona, has been preserved from those evenings.
The last period of his life fell on the Second World War, during which his family suffered. His wife and beloved nephew died. Three months after the death of his wife in the fall of 1944, the poet's physical and mental condition worsened. After the bombing of Vicenza on January 4, 1945, Barbarani was taken to the hospital, where he died a few days later.
