The main task of the main forces [1] was considered to be the main task of the guard regiment ; as a rule, it consisted mainly of cavalry units [2] . The methods of its organization, recruitment and command did not differ from other structural units of the Russian army [1] .
It is worth noting that in a number of historical and literary materials devoted to the XIV-XV centuries, there is some confusion with the concepts of “ advanced regiment ” and “ guard regiment ”, as well as with the definition of their number and name [1] . It is assumed that this is a consequence of the absence before the XVI century of a clear distinction between the functions of the guard and advanced regiments [1] . Because of this, these concepts were often used as synonyms, and sometimes the avant-garde regiment was called advanced, sometimes guard, and sometimes both of these terms were used [1] .
By the beginning of the XVI century, the final design of the guard regiment took place as a separate and independent tactical unit of the Russian army; he was assigned the duties of a rearguard and reserve, and the advanced regiment began to perform the functions of the vanguard [1] .
The last mention of the use of a guard regiment in the military organization of the Russian army belongs to the Crimean campaigns of 1687 and 1689 [1] [2] .
The number of formations of the imperial large regiment (marching ratias ) is known according to the discharge murals analyzed by the historian O. A. Kurbatov [3] .
