Description

The main background of the upper side of the wings is one-color dark brown. On the upper side of the front and hind wings, developed spots of red color are located to varying degrees - from sometimes almost poorly developed in males to vice versa, extremely developed in females, sometimes occupying almost the entire wing area. Antennae in both sexes with a gradually thickening mace. At the base of the fore wings two veins are swollen. The copulative apparatus of males is distinguished by the presence of a Julien organ - a modified VIII tergite of the abdomen with modified scales on the posterior margin.

Habitat and habitat

Endemic of the island of Sardinia ( Italy ). Especially widespread in the mountains of Monti del Gennargentu. Butterflies inhabit open biotopes with grass cover, glades, meadows near streams, etc. at altitudes from 400 to 1300 meters above sea level [1] .

Biology

The flight time of butterflies lasts from late May to late September. Caterpillar feed plants are cereals [1] .
