History
With the decree of the Führer of April 1, 1944, in order to bring the borders of administrative units to party uniforms, the province of Saxony was abolished. The administrative district of Magdeburg was proclaimed an independent province of Magdeburg. The governor of the province was Gauleiter Gau Magdeburg-Anhalt Rudolf Yordan , who also served as Reichsstatgalter for the states of Anhalt and Braunschweig .
In addition, according to the decree, the former Saxon administrative district of Merseburg also became an independent province of Halle-Merseburg . The administrative district of Erfurt, which consisted of several regions that were not geographically interconnected, was directly subordinated to the Reichsstatgalter in Thuringia. The decree entered into force on July 1, 1944.
The new province of Magdeburg did not last long. Exactly one year later, in July 1945, by decree of the Soviet military administration of the provinces of Halle-Merseburg and Magdeburg, together with Anhalt, they were merged into the new province of Saxony, which in 1946 was renamed the province of Saxony-Anhalt and in 1947, after the liquidation of the Prussian state, was transferred to the rank of independent land . Anhalt's statehood was thus also finally eliminated. The territory of the district of Erfurt is included in the modern state of Thuringia .
