Doubleday, Henry (entomologist)

Henry Doubleday ( born Henry Doubleday ; July 1, 1808 - June 29, 1875 ) is an English entomologist and ornithologist .

The researcher who described a number of zoological taxa . The names of these taxa (to indicate authorship) are accompanied by the designation " Doubleday, H. "

Henry Doubleday was the eldest son of Quaker and grocer Benjamin Doubleday and his wife Mary from Epping in Essex . He and his brother Edward Doubleday spent their childhood collecting natural history in the Epping Forest. He lived at about the same time as his cousin Henry Doubleday (1810–1902), a scientist and gardener . A blue commemorative plaque on the corner of High Street and Buttercross Lane in Ipping is dedicated to him.

Henry Doubleday became the author of the first catalog of British butterflies and moths , the Synonymic List of Lepidoptera of Britain (1847–1850). He gave names to several species of moths. His collection of moths is kept at the Museum of Natural History in London.
