George Bennett ( born April 7, 1990 in Nelson , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand professional road racing cyclist who plays for the Jumbo-Visma World Tour Team. [1] The first New Zealander to win the UCI World Tour .

Career
George Bennet was born in Nelson in 1990. [2] Educated at Waimea College. [3] Since 2012, a professional cyclist. After two seasons in the American team, RadioShack-Nissan moved to Cannondale in 2014, and Team Lotto NL-Jumbo in 2015.
In May 2015, Bennett was supposed to start on the Giro d'Italia , but before the start of the race, a medical test showed him a low level of cortisol (later it turned out that this was caused by an illness) and according to the rules of the Movement for a Credible Cycling (MPCC) he was expelled from the application start-up Team Lotto NL-Jumbo . At the same time, the leadership of the Dutch team decided not to replace him with another racer and take part in the race. [four]
2016
In 2016, Bennett first took part in the Tour de France . In the team, he was considered as the main gregar of captain Wilko Kelderman at the mountain stages. [5] His best performance in the race was 7th in stage 9 with a mountain finish in Andorra , which many thought was the most difficult stage that year. [6] At this stage, Bennett, who was driving in isolation, on one of the turns when climbing to Beyshalis , crashed into a fan who came out onto the road and knocked him down, but this incident did not prevent him from showing a good result. [7] In the final overall standings, he took 53rd place.
After the "Big Loop" Bennet participated in the group race at the Olympic Games and took 33rd place. He called the race “absolutely” the most difficult in his career (79 riders did not finish). [eight]
At the end of August, the New Zealander started in Vuelta of Spain and finished the race at the 10th position in the “general” (the leader of the Dutch “Lotto” Stephen Kreuswijk came down due to a fall [9] ).
2017
In May 2017, quite unexpectedly, after winning the California Tour , George Bennet was the first New Zealander to win the UCI World Tour race . [ten]
At the Tour de France Bennett fought for the top ten strongest general classification, after the captain of the Dutch team Robert Gesink came off due to a fall. [11] At stage 9, Bennett finished in 7th place in the group of the strongest generals. After stage 12, the New Zealander took 9th place in the "general." But at stage 16, taking 12th place in the overall standings, he was forced to leave the race due to gastroenteritis . [12]
The disease prevented the full preparation for the Vuelta of Spain , nevertheless Bennett started on the Spanish grand tour , but came down after stage 11 due to unfavorable conditions. [13]
