History
The building was built in its current location in the 15th century, but on December 20, 1469, Marcantonio Maffei decided to expand it by adding a third floor. Construction work was completed only in 1668.
Palace Description
The three-story facade of the palace is made in the Baroque style . It starts just above the level of the square: below are the remains of the ancient Roman hill of the Capitol , where Piazza delle Erbe was later created.
On the ground floor there are five arcades between the tympans . Above each arcade there is a window with an elegant balcony divided by ionic half-columns decorated with large masks.
The third floor of the palace is made in the same style as the second, but has smaller windows and pilasters . The top of the facade is made in the style of a balustrade with six statues of deities, including Hercules , Jupiter , Venus , Mercury , Apollo and Minerva .
The latter are carved from local marble, with the exception of Hercules, which is believed to have come from an ancient temple that was once located on a Roman capitol hill. Inside the palace is a kind of spiral stone staircase.
