Biography

Bathing of Bathsheba (1552). Canvas, oil. 91 x 98 cm. Uffizi , Florence

Born in 1516 in Verona in the family of the artist Agostino Riccio. He studied painting in his father’s workshop, which was located near the church of St. Stephen in Verona. He continued his studies at the workshop of Giovan Francesco Caroto. While the other students of the artist were associated with the Venetian school of painting, Riccio was heavily influenced by the works of Giulio Romano and Francesco Primaticcio. In 1543, for the first time in documents, his nickname Bruzasortsi appeared during his collaboration with the Philharmonic Academy in Verona. He later became the official artist of this academy. In 1551, he completed an order to create a number of paintings and frescoes in the town hall of Trento. In 1556, he worked on a series of frescoes and paintings in the bishop's palace in Verona. After these orders, in 1566, Bruzasortsi painted “The Equestrian Portrait of Emperor Charles V” and “Portrait of Pope Clement VII” for the Ridolfi-Da Liska Palace and the painting “Our Lady of Glory with Two Saints” for the Church of St. Peter the Martyr in Verona. Currently, a number of paintings by the artist are stored in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Church of Santa Maria in Organo and the Bevilacqua Palace in Verona.

Among the students of Bruzasorci were his daughter Chechilla and sons Felice and Giambattista, as well as Giovanni Battista Zelotti, Bernardino India, Paolo Farinati. His workshop became the site of modern art in Verona at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Some researchers consider him the predecessor of Paolo Veronese and one of the innovators of Verona painting of the XVI century.
