Biography
Russian From the peasants . He graduated from a village school in 1924. Since 1924 he worked at a sausage factory in the city of Kimry, Tver province : accountant, warehouse worker, secretary of the local committee .
In the Red Army since September 1929. He graduated from the one-year team of the 5th Caucasian Rifle Regiment of the 3rd Caucasian Rifle Division of the Caucasian Red Banner Army in 1930 (the division was deployed in the Azerbaijan SSR ) [1] . Since September 1930 - platoon commander in the 48th Infantry Division of the Moscow Military District ( Tver ). Since November 1931 - platoon commander of the regiment’s school of the 150th Infantry Regiment of the 50th Infantry Division . Since August 1932, he served in the 80th separate machine-gun battalion as part of a number of fortified areas in the Far East : commander of a training company platoon, since February 1934 - training company commander. From October 1936, he was the chief of staff of the battalion , and from July 1938, he was the battalion commander in the 94th rifle regiment of the 32nd rifle division of the Special Red Banner Far Eastern Army . At the head of his battalion, he participated in battles near Lake Hassan in July-August 1938. He showed courage, for which he was awarded the Order of the Red Star .
Since January 1939, he was an assistant commander of the 96th Infantry Regiment on the combat front in the same division. In April 1939 he was sent to study. In June 1941 he graduated from the Military Academy of the Red Army named after M.V. Frunze .
Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. Major Zavyalov was appointed commander of the 860th Infantry Regiment of the 283rd Infantry Division , which began to hastily form in the Oryol Military District . Since mid-September 1941, at the head of the regiment - in the army on the Bryansk Front , he participated in local offensive battles in the Yampolsky district of the Sumy region . During the German general attack on Moscow that began on September 30, his regiment with the division fell into the circle of encirclement. But during the Oryol-Bryansk defensive operation, already on the night of October 5, the regiment and division broke out of the encirclement in relative order, and were immediately put on the defensive. After a month of stubborn defensive battles, on November 8, 1941, he was seriously wounded in the stomach [2] .
He spent several months in hospitals , survived several operations. Due to his state of health he was recognized as fit for military service and was no longer on the front. In July 1942 he was appointed chief of staff of the 37th reserve rifle brigade in the Volga Military District (Seliksinskie camps in the Penza region ). When in May 1944, the brigade was deployed to the 37th spare rifle division, Lieutenant Colonel Zavyalov was appointed its chief of staff. Until the end of the war, he was engaged in training personnel for the army.
After the war, from December 1945 he commanded a rifle regiment, was the chief of staff of the rifle brigade in the Volga Military District.
In 1948 he graduated from the Higher Military Academy named after K. E. Voroshilov . Since 1949, for 36 years he served in the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR , having gone through all the steps of the staff service there. In addition to staff work, he also became a major scientist in the field of military construction , military doctrine , strategy and operational art . The author of over 40 scientific papers. Doctor of Military Sciences (1975).
For great merits in the field of military science and conscientious long-term service in the Armed Forces by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR of February 16, 1982 he was awarded the Order "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 1st degree. Thus, he became the first full holder of this order, which was the rarest award in the USSR: there were only 13 of them [3] .
Since 1985 - retired.
