Biography

In 585, the Kingdom of the Suevi , on whose territory the diocese of Lugo was located, was captured by the Visigoths . The new ruler of these lands, King Leovigild , was an ardent confessor of Arianism , while the Suevians from 561 were adherents of Orthodox Christianity . Wanting to strengthen his power over the conquered territories, the Visigoth monarch began the persecution of the Orthodox. Among the victims was Bishop Nitigisii , deprived of the pulpit and sent to exile. Instead, the new head of the diocese with the center in the city of Lugo was appointed Arian Bekila [1] [2] [3] .

About the origin of Bekil in medieval historical sources of information is not preserved. Based on onomastic data, it is assumed that he was a Visigoth. About what merits to Leovigild he received the episcopal dignity, is also not known [1] [4] .

King Leovigild died already in 586. The new ruler of the Visigoth kingdom , Reccared I , was a secret supporter of orthodoxy. In 589, at the Third Toledo Cathedral, he solemnly renounced Arianism and declared himself an open confessor of Orthodox Christianity. This move received the support of most of the clergy of his kingdom. The Aryan bishops participating in this synod were forced to abandon their Arian preferences and bring repentance. Bekila, , Bishop Porto and Bishop Viseu Sunnila renounced Arian beliefs, vowed to be confessors of the Nicene Creed , and were forgiven [1] [2] [3] [4 ] ] [5] [6] .

There was no reliable information about the fate of Bekilah. It is not known for sure whether he retained the episcopal department. In various sources, the head of the diocese of Lugo after the Third Toledo Cathedral is either Bekila or Nytigisius who returned from exile [1] [3] . It is possible that for some time in Lugo, as well as in some other dioceses of the former Svevo Kingdom, there were two bishops [7] . It is believed that both Bequila and Nitigisius died shortly after 589 [1] [3] .

Who was the next bishop of Lugo is also not exactly established. In the lists of the heads of the diocese, Vasconius is called such a hierarchy, whose activity dates back to the second third of the 7th century [1] [2] [3] .
