Editor of the journal N. N. Krasev

Positioned itself as a monthly magazine, although in fact it appeared less frequently. So, in 1922 the magazine came out three times (with combined issues): No. 1-2 (July-August), No. 3-4 (September-October), No. 5-6 (November-December).

At the 3rd congress of the CFE Treaty in late 1922, when discussing the issue of further publication of the journal, N. N. Krasev noted the growing need for it and at the same time lack of funds, only possible assistance from abroad gave hope for the successful development of the journal and other publishing activities: “The foreign brothers promise significant support in the future, and now they have sent up to 70 subscribers. Russian brothers in America accepted the magazine Word and Life as their organ. This encourages us not only from the material side, but also morally ” [3] . At the congress, it was deemed necessary to continue the publication of the Word and Life magazine, entrusting editing to the Council of CFE.

However, the publication of the magazine ceased after the final establishment of Soviet power in Vladivostok (end of 1922).

The volume of one issue is 18 pages (along with the cover). Contained illustrations.

Currently available for research numbers for 1922: No. 1-2 and No. 3-4 (in hard copy are stored in the State Archives of Primorsky Krai) .

Contents

The magazine was aimed at both ministers and ordinary members of the communities, as well as unbelievers and non-believers, that is, it was considered as a missionary tool. So, in the introductory article of the first issue of 1922, N. N. Krasev said that when he decided to continue publishing the journal he. First of all, he was guided by “the consciousness of his duty to transfer the life-giving Word into a dying life” [4]

The magazine included spiritual and instructive articles by domestic and foreign authors, verses. There was a heading “Youth Department” in the magazine, where articles were published addressed to believing youth.

In addition, the magazine published materials describing the life of Russian evangelical communities both in the Far East and neighboring Manchuria (Northern China), as well as in other regions of Russia and the United States. These were articles in the genre of reporting from various Christian events, excerpts from letters of believers, reports on missionaries about their work, reports on the expenditure of funds raised for charitable purposes, and so on.

At the same time, regular reports on events in the life of evangelical Christians in Russia, for example, on All-Russian congresses, played an important role [5] . The CFE leadership sought to cover the situation in Soviet Russia, in particular regarding the process of evangelization of the country's population [6] .

Important dates in the life of evangelical Christians did not go unnoticed, for example, on the occasion of the anniversary of I. S. Prokhanov , the journal “Word and Life” published an essay on his life path [6] .

The journal Slovo i Zhizn published letters to the Council of ALL asking for help, describing the tragic situation of the population in the starving regions, asking them to save them from starvation. In Vladivostok, donations to starving brothers in Russia were accepted by the Council of TWO ALL. In the magazine "Word and Life" published reports on the income and expenditure of funds for the starving. The Word and Life magazine also published reports of American co-religionists on donations collected and sent in favor of the starving brothers in Russia in 1922; there were no Far Eastern communities among the recipients of assistance [7] .

The participation of foreign co-religionists

Being a magazine of evangelical Christians of the Far East, it was simultaneously recognized as a magazine of American-Canadian evangelical Christians - immigrants from Russia [8] . Moreover, the subscription of foreign co-religionists to the magazine was considered as financial assistance, which makes it possible to provide financial support to missionaries in the Far East [9] .

In the summer of 1922, Word and Life magazine wrote that John Johnson (a representative of the Union of Evangelical Christians of the United States), “reports that they held two fraternal conferences, one in America and the other in Canada. At the conference, the brothers decided to recognize our magazine “Word and Life” as their magazine and collaborate in it ” [10] [11] . In the fall of 1922, the American-Canadian department of the magazine appeared, in which a letter was published by John Johnson, in which he described how he managed to reach a decision on the recognition of the magazine as his evangelical Christians [12] .
