Roman Ivanovich Savitsky (March 11, 1907 - January 12, 1960) - Ukrainian pianist, teacher and music critic, founder of the Ukrainian Music Institute in Philadelphia .

Biography

Born in the city of Sokal ( Galicia , now Lviv region ) in the family of a priest, father Ivan Savitsky and Vladimir Kosonotsky. First, he studied at the gymnasium in his hometown, and then continued his studies at the Sambir gymnasium, where his father got a job. When Roman was 11 years old, his father unexpectedly passed away. To help his mother, Roman began to earn extra money - with the permission of the director of the gymnasium, every day in the local cinema club for two hours he was engaged in musical accompaniment to silent film [1] .

He graduated from the Lysenko Music Institute in Lviv ( Vasily Barvinsky class) and the Prague Conservatory under V. Kurtz (1932). Concerted in Galicia, Kiev , Dnepropetrovsk , Germany , USA . He performed on radio and television. Collaborated with the team "Boyan Drohobych".

In 1937, Roman Savitsky married Ivanna Treshnevskaya, a children's writer, and in March 1938 the couple had a son - Savitsky Romana Romanovich - the future musicologist, bibliographer.

In March 1939, in the Atlantic Hall (now the National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetskaya ) at the Shevchenkovsky concert on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the poet, Roman Savitsky first performed the concert in F minor for piano Vasily Barvinsky (conducted by the correspondent of Mykola Kolessa )

In 1939-1941 he was an assistant professor at the Lviv Conservatory and the dean of the piano department. During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1944) was the music editor of the Lviv Radio. In 1946 he founded and for three years was the director of a music school in Berchtesgaden (Germany), and in 1952-1959 - the Ukrainian Music Institute in Philadelphia, USA. Also in 1957, he served as professor at the Philadelphia Conservatory.

Among Savitsky’s creative heritage are piano processing of folk melodies for young people, articles, reviews, and the work “Fundamentals of Piano Pedagogy”. The best students of Roman Savitsky: Oleg Krishtalsky , Virko Balei , Roksolana Ogorodnik-Gerasimovich, Taisa Golinata-Bogdanskaya, Yuri Oleinik, Juliana Osinchuk [2] .
