Biography

He studied at the Polytechnic School in Paris. Carried out the mapping of the western shores of France.

In 1837, he participated in the round -the- world expedition of J. Dumont-Durville . Performing hydrographic work in many places visited by this expedition, significantly improved the techniques of shooting the coast from the sea, when for some reason it is not possible to do this work on the coast. The method of marine photography, preferred by him, was used for a long time everywhere when coastal surveying was impossible. For the first time this method is described by the author in one of the volumes of the description of “Voyage au pôle Sud” Dumont-Durville, entitled: “Hydrographie”.

Of the later works of K. Winsendon-Dumoulin, especially remarkable for its accuracy is a survey of the Strait of Gibraltar from the sea. It represents the best proof of the perfection of the method of C. Winsendon-Dumoulin

His name is mentioned several times in J. Verne ’s novel “ Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea ” in the 20th chapter of the Torres Strait , where Captain Nemo says:

In front of me was an excellent map of the Torres Strait, compiled by engineer-hydrograph Vincendan Dumoulin and a midshipman - later admiral - Kupwan Debua, who was at Dumont-Durville headquarters during his last round-the-world voyage. This map, like the map compiled by Captain King, are the best maps of the Torres Strait, bringing clarity to the confusion of this reef maze. I studied them with the greatest attention.
