History
The first Spanish settlement on the site of a modern city was founded in 1535. However, a year later it was abandoned due to resistance by the local Native American population. At the end of the XVIII century, by order of the Spanish colonial administration, a fort was erected on the hill of Cerro el Morro, designed to protect the section of the sea route between the ports of Barcelona and Cumana from pirates . In the middle of the XIX century, the dairy industry began to develop rapidly, providing the needs of nearby Barcelona. During this period of time, the city got its modern name (the word lechería in Spanish means " dairy farm "). In the second half of the 20th century, the sphere of resort recreation was actively developing in Lecheria.
