History

Gboard started on iOS in May 2016, [1] and then it was released on Android in December of that year as a major update to the Google Keyboard [2] [3] [4] already created by then.

Features

By the time of release, Gboard included Google search , continuous input , easy finding and sharing emojis and GIF images , an predictive input engine that predicts what will be written later and support for many languages [1] [2] . By the time it was released on iOS, the keyboard only knew English [1] , and by the time the Android version was published, more than a hundred languages were supported [2] .

In the August 2016 update, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish were added to the iOS application, and an option appeared that allows you to insert emojis similar to the meaning of the written one. The ability to select a dark theme and create your own was added [5] .

In the February 2017 update, support for Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Catalan, Hungarian, Malay, Russian, Spanish and Turkish, as well as voice input, was added to the iOS version [6] [ 7] .

In the April issue, Google increased the number of supported Indian dialects from 11 to 22 [8] [9] .

In the June update for Android, the ability to recognize drawn emojis and the prediction of further phrases was added [10] [11] .

Criticism

Nathan Olivarez-Giles from The Wall Street Journal praised the keyboard, in particular, integrated Google search. However, he noted that the application does not currently support integration with other programs on the device. This means that requests such as “buy tickets for the movie“ Captain America “” sent it to a web browser , and not to the movie theater application installed on the device. He also praised the predictive input engine. He also learned that Gboard "cleverly matches emojis with words." He also noted the lack of the ability to change the size of the keys and control with one hand. “If you want to diversify your keyboard, Gboard is not for you,” he wrote [12] .
