Better known as the leader of Knight's squad, gangs of deserters from the army of the Confederate States of America who opposed the confederate troops during the Civil War .

After the war, he married a second marriage to his grandfather's freed former slave. Since she was black, Mississippi did not recognize this marriage.

His son Tom wrote a biography of his father. The fate of Knight is devoted to the feature films “Roots” (1948) and “ Jones Free State ” (2016).
