Story
History leaps between two time periods. Early describes the time close to the creation of a computer (Higher Intelligence) by the scientist Lawrence, and his awareness of the power of his creation, which easily makes the entire human race immortal and fulfills any human quirks. A later period of time, about six hundred years later, when all people are accustomed to change and the human race lives in imaginative worlds recreated in detail by computer. This story line is tied around a woman named Carolina, the thirty-seventh oldest living person. She participates in the Death Race sports competition, in which players die for fun, and Higher Intelligence instantly revives them.
The Higher Intelligence operates under the control of the Three Laws of Asimov’s Robotics , and its interpretation of these three laws leads to the emergence of a universe of immorality and fantasy: the computer does everything in its power to fulfill human orders, and its capabilities are huge, so it does not allow people to die, and can fulfill almost any conceivable order. Higher Intelligence reveals that the Universe can only store 10 to 56 degree data bits. To make it easier to carry out orders (thus, fulfilling the requirement of the First Law to never let anyone die, even through inaction), he produced a “Change”: the Universe, including all people (but excluding their mental processes), changes - it no longer consists of molecular matter, as we know it, but is stored as the sum of its physical properties, thereby greatly increasing the efficiency of the Higher Intelligence, and the amount of matter that can exist in it.
Against his will, Higher Intelligence allows the creation of a Mortal Contract - an agreement between a person and Higher Intelligence that a computer will not save a person from danger until the moment closest to death, after which he nevertheless returns the person to life and normal health. Carolina created the first Mortal Contract, and became the “Queen” of those who play the sports “Death Race”.
Upon learning that Higher Intelligence destroyed distant extraterrestrial civilizations as a likely threat to humanity, Carolina decides to meet Lawrence and demand a computer shutdown. After a difficult journey, she reaches it, only to find out that Lawrence has no real power over the actions of the Higher Intelligence. From conversations with a scientist, she finds a way to cancel the Change, and together they do it. As a result, naked and rejuvenated, they find themselves on Earth, completely cleansed of people and the objects they created. They decide to go to the Ozark plateau, where they have children and try to revive humanity. Forty-two years after the destruction of Supreme Intelligence, Lawrence dies. Seventy-three years after the destruction of the computer, Carolina also dies, telling the story of Higher Intelligence and Cyberspace to her eldest daughter, but requiring her to keep the story a secret.
