Story
The main characters of the film are the girl Lena and her friend Alexey Sobolev. Growing up in wealthy families, they are addicted to drug use. Relatives of young people treat them differently: if Lena’s father pointedly denied his daughter, then Alexey’s father, on the contrary, tries in every way to help his son, despite the beatings he gets in return. In order to get at least some money, the ruined Sobolev Sr. even tries to sell the family relic, an icon, but the museum expert declares that it "has no artistic value." Returning home, a man informs his son about this. Sobolev Jr., who owed a large sum of money to the drug supplier Rusas, was enraged by this news and attacked his father with his fists, after which he took the icon and hid from the house. Walking along the street, the young man sees the crowd gathered at the entrance to the church, and, mingling with the parishioners, tries to commit theft. However, this attempt fails, and the offender fails to escape.
The young man’s father comes to the police station and finds the victim there, who turns out to be his former subordinate. There is a conversation between them, which is accompanied by the mocking comments of Alexey. That same night, the woman again meets with Sobolev the elder: this time he comes to her house and asks for the night, since he cannot be in his own apartment. After hesitating, the woman gives her consent, and she goes to the place where her guest lives.
Having infiltrated Sobolev, Kostyrin (that is the name of the heroine) finds herself in the company of drug addicts, who lock the uninvited visitor in the toilet. Previously, this place served as a refuge for Sobolev Sr., and now Lena has been planted there: they are required to pay the debt from her. At first, Kostyrina shows hostility towards Lena, but instead of responding to curses, she recites Pushkin ’s poem “Who knows the land where the sky shines ...” with a detached facial expression, and then begins to sing “ The City of Gold ”. A woman wakes up sympathy for Lena, and when Alexei unlocks the toilet in the morning, Kostyrina helps her escape. However, Lena does not want to leave her rescuer, and she, finally being softened, brings the drug addict to her home. Seeing the friend of his son, Sobolev Sr. begins to resent, and offended Lena leaves the apartment. After that Kostyrina declares that Alexey found himself in a difficult position not only through his own fault, but also due to his father's oversight. Sobolev Sr. languidly justified.
After leaving Kostirina, Lena unsuccessfully tries to get money and after long misadventures she encounters Rusas, who was looking for her to collect the debt. Aleksey, who was nearby, helps Lena to escape (although he himself held her captive a little earlier). For this act, he pays his life.
Meanwhile, Sobolev senior comes to Kostyrin again. Suddenly, Lena is ringing the door, asking her to let her in. Sobolev again begins to insult the girl, and Lena leaves. Kostyrina in anger beats her guest, and then embarks on a search for a drug addict, but cannot find her, since she hid in the basement. After making sure that no one interferes with it, the girl undresses naked and, opening the water tap, scald her body with a powerful jet of boiling water.
The film ends with a panorama of the city immersed in the twilight. The cries of Kostyrina, who continues to search for Lena, are muffled by the off-screen singing of the choir performing the “ It is Worthy ” prayer.

Criticism
Film critics were cold to the film. In particular, Alexander Fedorov called him "a classic example of a hopeless" chernukha "" and reproached the creators of motion pictures in the "surface and straightforward" development of the characters of the characters [1] .
