History

Scotstoun was until the early 1860s the location of the Oswald family estate centered around Scotstoun House. By 1861, as Clyde's shipyards expanded westward, industrial development reached Scotston. Charles Connell and Company was built in the area in 1861, and the new Yarrow Shipbuilders in 1906. The Oswald estate was gradually reduced, many plots were sold for housing construction (the Victoria Park area arose here) and for the further development of industrial production (metallurgy, machine building, shipbuilding). Enterprises such as Coventry Ordnance Works and Albion Motors sprang up along the river.

In the southern part of Scotston, stone houses of the late XIX - early XX centuries are characteristic, in the north - terraced country houses of the same period in a characteristic English style with wide alleys, an early example of garden suburban urban planning in the style of Ebenizer Howard .

In the west is the high-rise apartment district, Kingsway Apartments, and the new housing complex, built in 2016 by the Glasgow Housing Association.

Housing and social life

Today, part of Scotston is located in a conservation area near the Jordanhill School watershed and is popular with families looking for homes with gardens near the center of the West End . The local elementary school and church lie in the north of the area. To the south of the main road is an area of apartment buildings, a mixture of private property and social housing. To the west is a new housing project for homes and apartments. Some of the high-rise buildings were demolished to make way for the new Glasgow Housing Association Housing Association's new housing project. Several high-rise buildings still stand behind the new residential complex.

Scotston Elementary School is located in Scotston. In the past, it housed the beautiful Red Sandstone Victoria Drive High School Building, which was demolished in 1998. One of Scotton’s best historic buildings, the Western Church, was mysteriously destroyed by fire and in its 1990s, the Calah housing complex was built.

Scotston has long gone through a period of new housing construction, it houses the Scotston Entertainment Center , opened in 1994, where the Scotston Stadium, the international athletics center, the Scottish National Badminton Academy, and the 25-meter swimming pool used by the Glasgow swimming team are located.

On June 18, 2011, a new community center was opened on Balmoral Street. It's called The Heart of Scotstoun Community Center. In 2016, the Cafe Taste Café was opened at Dumbarton Road.

Part of Scotston is a protected area, local activists formed the Scotstoun Conservation Area Residents Association. There is the Scotstoun Community Council, which is active in this area and represents the entire Scottston community. The community council meets on the last Thursday of every month (with the exception of July and December) at the Scottston Heart Community Center. These meetings are open to the public.

Scotston Elementary School

Scotston Elementary School was built by Renfrew Landward School Board in 1905 at Earlbank Avenue. [1] The building differs from those built by the Glasgow School Board in many ways, in particular the characteristic towers. [2] Current principal of the school is Jillian Mackay. The school is part of the new Knightswood educational community. [3]
