“There they are and the road. (The king made a popular act, getting rid of German titles among family members of His Majesty.) " Caricature of King George V, who canceled all German titles of his relatives due to German phobia, Punch magazine 1917

The House of Windsor was established on July 17, 1917 by King George V in order to rid the ruling dynasty of the former German name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha during the First World War . The name "Windsor" refers to Windsor Castle - one of the main residences of the British monarch.

Titles and appeals

The members of the British royal family are titled by Their Majesties (the ruling monarch, the spouse of the ruling king, the widow queen) and Their Royal Highnesses (the spouse of the queen, the younger members of the family). The members of the male family on the eve of the wedding receive, as a rule, one of the , which historically belong to the Crown:

  • the Duke of Edinburgh (the spouse of Elizabeth II is Prince Philip , in the future the title will be transferred to his youngest son Prince Edward );
  • the Duke of Gloucester (granted to younger members of the family, currently held by Prince Richard , grandson of George V );
  • Duke of Kent (usually given to the younger sons of the monarch, the holder - Prince Edward , the grandson of George V);
  • the Duke of York (as a rule, it is received by the second sons of monarchs, the holder is Prince Andrew , the second son of Elizabeth II);
  • the Duke of Cambridge (also granted to younger members of the family, the holder - Prince William , the grandson of Elizabeth II);
  • Duke of Sussex (get younger children of the monarch, was supposed for the younger son of Elizabeth II, Prince Edward, who, however, preferred the specially created title of Count of Wessex , holder - Prince Harry , grandson of Elizabeth II).

The heir to the throne traditionally receives the title of Prince of Wales and at the same time - the titles of the Duke of Cornwall , the Duke of Rothesia (as the heir to the Scottish throne) and Count Chester .

The ruling monarch is at the same time the holder of the title of duke of Lancaster (titling “duke” regardless of gender) and the duke of Normandy in relation to the Channel Islands

The title of the Duke of Windsor is separate: it was created by King George VI for his elder brother Edward , who was known as King Edward VIII before the abdication of the throne and was not created before. Edward did not leave the children, so with his death in 1972 the title returned to the Crown.

Members of the Windsor House

According to the proclamation of 1917, descendants of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the male line were declared members of the House of Windsor, with British citizens except for women who married members of other surnames. Currently, all members of the House of Windsor are descendants of the sons of King George V.

On April 9, 1952, Queen Elizabeth II issued a proclamation that her descendants, though not descended from the male line of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, continue to belong to the House of Windsor.

Genealogy

The Windsor dynasty is the British branch of the Saxe-Coburg-Gothic dynasty (and thus the branch of the Wettin house) to which the husband of Queen Victoria belonged to Prince Albert (Victoria herself came from the Hanover dynasty ). The only king of Great Britain who belonged to the Saxe-Coburg-Gothic dynasty was officially considered to be Edward VII (reigned in 1901–10).

From the point of view of traditional genealogy, in which kinship is considered to be along the male line, the Windsor dynasty should have ended on Elizabeth II. Prince Charles and his descendants would have to belong to the Glucksburg branch of the Oldenburg House , from which Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip (from whom the Russian Emperor Peter III and all his descendants in the male line also belonged to this house). However, in view of the aforementioned proclamation of 1952, just as the Russian kings of the Holstein-Gottorp dynasty called themselves the Romanovs , Charles and his descendants continue to be called Windsor.

Notes:

  • Lilac color - monarchs;
  • Green color - members of the House of Windsor (descendants of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in a straight male line, as well as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in a straight male line, with the exception of married women);
  • Numbers - serial numbers in the line of succession to the throne;
  • * - the person is excluded from the order of succession to the throne due to membership in the Catholic Church;
  • Brothers and sisters are placed in the order of birth. In determining the order of succession to the throne, younger brothers have an advantage over older sisters. However, for those born after October 28, 2011, this rule no longer applies: for them, the order of succession is determined only by seniority (in practice, the only living change affected Tanya (33) and Senna (32) Lewis, as well as Rufus (36) and Lila ( 35) Gilman, who in pairs exchanged in order of inheritance).
