Waite, William (chess player)

William Waite ( born William Wayte , September 4, 1829 , Kaln [2] , Wiltshire - May 3, 1898 , London ) is an English chess player and Anglican priest . Along with several other priests ( J. McDonnel , J. Owen , C. Ranken and A. Skipuort ), played a significant role in the development of the chess game during the reign of Queen Victoria . According to the authors of the "Chessmetrics" system [3] , in 1878 he was in the top ten in the class of the game.

Biography

In 1853 he received a bachelor's degree. In 1854, Mr .. took dignity. He worked at Eton College, Oxford University . In 1856 he received a master's degree. Since 1862, Mr .. became an elected preacher at Oxford University.

From 1876 to 1879 was a professor at University College London . He taught Greek.

After leaving the university, he was professionally engaged in ancient philology. Prepared the 5th edition of Plato’s dialogue " Protagoras " (1888) and the 2nd edition of the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities [4] .
