Biography

Francisco was born in Santander . The youngest (second) son of Francisco de Bourbon-i-de-la-Torre (1882-1953) and Enriquette de Bourbon-i-Parade, 4th Duchess of Seville (1888-1968). He came from the morganatic line of the Spanish Bourbon dynasty and the fourth cousin of the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I.

During the Civil War in Spain in 1936, Officer Francisco de Bourbon participated in hostilities on the side of the nationalists as part of the Carlist detachments " Requet " [2] . He ended the war with the rank of colonel of cavalry.

After the death of his mother, on March 2, 1968, he renounced his claim to the title of Duke of Seville in favor of his eldest son, Francisco de Bourbon-i-Escassani.

Marriages and children

First wife from October 4, 1942, Enriquette Escasani-i-Miguel (October 13, 1925 - May 16, 1962). The couple had two sons:

  • Francisco de Bourbon-i-Escasani , 5th Duke of Seville (born November 16, 1943)
  • Alfonso Carlos de Bourbon-y-Escasani (born February 10, 1945)

2nd wife since March 15, 1967 Maria de Lopez y Salvador (born December 11, 1928). The couple had one son:

Order of St. Lazarus

Coat of arms of the Grand Master of the Order of St. Lazarus
  • Coadjutor of the Grand Master of the Order of St. Lazarus (1935-1959)
  • Grand Master of the Order of St. Lazarus (1959-1967, 1973-1995)

During his tenure as Grand Master, the Order of St. Lazarus underwent a split, which led to the creation of two lines: the Maltese (supporters of the Duke of Seville) and the French (supporters of Charles-Philippe of Orleans, Duke of Nemours , and Pierre-Timoleon de Cosse-Brissac, 12- Duke de Brissac ). Francisco de Bourbon continued to head the Order of Malta until his death in 1995 . Under his leadership in 1986, an attempt was made to reunite the Order of St. Lazarus. In 1995, after the death of Francisco de Bourbon, the title of Grand Master was inherited by his eldest son, Francisco de Bourbon-i-Escasani, 5th Duke of Seville. In 2008, two branches of the Order reunited.
